DOGS of KINGS - KINGS of dogs
... cause I learned more from people owning wolfhounds than from vets, here follows a line-up with people's experiences ...

Brian Finn Valente, I just read that a hound was rush to vet last night due to bloat. Can we see if others who have experienced such a emergency share their stories that lead up to their bloat, torsion experience ? Might give some of us an idea what to avoid, if anything.

Kathy Welling Bloat REALLY scares me. I am an hour away from the nearest emergency vet hospital.
Stacey Thompson Kathy- maybe your vet could go over some emergency procedures with you! It's always scary yo not have a ER vet close- that's part of why we don't travel far with our boys.
Patty Storkel Kathy, my vet gave an emergency talk to our club and this was asked. He said in a dire case, take a ball point pen, take out the insides, and jab it through his side- have your vet show you the best spot. I don't remember if it was behind the last rib or not. The trapped gas will be expelled which will buy you time as you rush to the vets. My vet gave us an 18-gage needle with a hub that we could use in place of the pen and showed us where to insert it. I carried that needle (in a case) around with me for many years. Thankfully I never needed it as I'm close to an ER vet. Been through it 3 times...
Carol Freeman We are 1/2 to 45 minutes away from emergency vet, after hours & it is always in the back of my mind as to what to do.
Dominique Selmayr Try. I took a walk with Quadros because I hoped it would help - didn't realize it was bloat then...

Stacey Thompson This is a great technique but, I wish there was a video to show exactly where the points are and what type pressure to use for everyone!
CathieJo Jacobson Stacey Thompson I've thought the same thing!! Maybe someone in this group has the expertise to do just that??
Dominique Selmayr Quadros had bloat last year. He is fine again. But here is what i learned: it occurs mostly in the dead of night - between 2-4 am. The relation to feeding and playing is not given, as has been proved in lots of studies. You can add the classic anti tummy ache tea for babies to the food (fennelseed, carawayseed and aniseseed) to prevent bloat.
The signs for bloat can be quite different, Quadros was unrestful, wouldn't lie down, tried to eat grass and drink and threw it all up again. But I was told there are dogs that lie down and refuse to move... speed is of essence... and even if you made it to surgery ... a lot of dogs die in within the first three days of surgery... the torsion of the stomach rips of lots of blood vessels... my vet told me she has never seen so much blood before... here are two pictures, first Quadros promise to fight when I had to leave him for surgery...
Dominique Selmayr Moments before surgery
Sue Climpson acupressure point for bloat
Sue Climpson another pic of acupressure
Sue Climpson I repeated info that had already been sent as my computer only showed a couple of posts, now it shows a gt. many.
Jennifer Krontz Please remember bloat and torsion are different. And wasting precious time trying to find an unfamiliar pressure point and waiting for results could be fatal. You have 20 minutes. Don't waste it or spend time questioning it particularly if you are unfamiliar. What is a $150 wasted vet visit vs death?
Lucy Red Never had never want so I try very hard to avoid as per our vet who has an iw no playing for one hour before eating and no playing for one hour after eating and no excessive drinking water before or after and I'm very very strict with this rule !!!
Patty Storkel These are all good measures but be aware they can also bloat on an empty stomach.
Marian Temple True Patty Storkel!!!! Just seeing this after my almost 9 year old just threw up 2x.. but.. but there was grass init...she is here next to me.. resting..she has bowel sounds. Always check the gut for bowel sounds.. always.. as JenniferVinoski stated DO NOT WAIT...RUN to the vets. I have had 1 bloat situation in 34 years. Control their exercise for 1 1/2 hour before and after feeding. Period. I lean towards a raw diet..there tends to be less bloating with it. Wishing all great peace in knowing what to watch for.
Tanya Hart Newkirk Bowel sounds? Put your ear to their gut to see if you hear anything?
Belle McCluskey Unfortunately sometimes they will bloat despite anything you do to try to prevent it. Sometimes it's stress related, in my dogs case, and it can be genetics. Try everything to prevent it, but be aware it might still come.
Beth Greve Cassidy bloated overnight, and I had her at the vet first thing in the AM. I didn't know she was bloating, and the vet made fun of me, saying women worry about every little sound their dogs make. Got on the Wolfhound Quarterly page, asked some questions, and was told to head to an emergency vet ASAP. Got her to Purdue, and they had her in surgery before I even sat down. Saved her life. She was restless, and kept whining.
Stacey Thompson Good to always trust your gut instinct- you know your dog best!
Beth Greve Stacey Thompson Found that out-but Cassidy wouldn't be with me without help from people on WQ.
CathieJo Jacobson Hope you changed vets 🤨
Bird Kelly My Shae sufferred torsion in Dec. She had been at an IW potluck earlier , came home, ate her dinner and about an hour later began trying to vomit. Nothing came up. She tried again several times and became very restless. No obvious stomach extension buther tummy was tender. Went to the ER vet, 45 min. Away and they immediately did xrays and confirmed GVD. Surgery followed, but not as quickly as I would have liked...about an hour and a half later. She was not quite 3 and did well. She ate chicken we took in 12 hours later and we brought her home about 20 hours after surgery. She could barely walk but recovered fine. Thank God. Although we may never get the bill paid off!
Gail Neher The first bloat we had turned into torsion, but she survived. She wanted to drink, a LOT! Then would lie down and then vomit. Very restless. Was about 10 pm. Got her to emergency vet and they worked their miracle. Second one was early morning. Got her in within 30 minutes. She did well.
Gail Neher This is scary stuff. Don't wait!
Penny McGonagle We have always been really strict, no exercise at least 2 hrs before/after feeds with both our Danes & our wolfhounds. Harker bloated about 6 mths ago. About 4 hrs after his evening feed he became unsettled, out in garden, back in house. Having lost our female Dane to the second time she bloated(despite being tacked) we rushed Harker to emergency vet. There was no real sign of distortion but the X-ray confirmed bloat, thankfully no torsion. They operated & tacked & thankfully he has made a fantastic recovery!
We keep gas-x to hand but the most important advice is DON'T HESITATE! Much rather have a bill & be wrong than ever be too late!
Penny McGonagle Day he came home n

Petra Christine Seider Is something like „gas x“ known or available in Germany?
Pauline Jewett Petra Christine Seider seemingly gas x is discontinued now so only stock in shops will be available. Have a friend in USA trying to source some for me.
Sheamus IW Bright The active ingredient is called Simethicone 125mg in Gas-x. You may be able to find another product in Germany
Mandy Addington I've got the gas x strips which you can only get overseas and they're really easy to give as they just melt on the tongue
Becky Fleetwood-Demma I found that Amazon offers GasX extra strength melt away stripes, I'll be ordering some. Thanks for suggesting it Mandy Addington.
Bev Calvert Awesome, thanks Mandy Addington & Becky Fleetwood-Demma.
Angie Adams Gas X is always on hand at our house!
Marian Temple Always and dont hesitate to give ample amounts!
Becky Fleetwood-Demma Marian Temple what would you consider a "ample amount" ?
Marian Temple If its liquid simethicone I give to affect... meaning 50 to 60 ccs.. if its the gas ex tablets... I give no fewer than 4 to 6... better to error on the side of caution!
Marian Temple We only have 1 chance at helping them and saving our hounds. God speed to all who come up against this horrid situation. Kia Kaha.... stand strong!!!!
Marian Temple ITs handy to have a stethescope to osscult their gut sounds..... dead silence in there.. run like your tail is on fire to the vets!!!! Do not stop!
CathieJo Jacobson Becky Fleetwood-Demma I've used the strips for Quinn's reflux episodes. They are great!
Philip Santilhano Great idea Brian.
Angie Adams Something else I learned about bloat, now that I have a boy, is that if you have a bitch that is in heat and an intact male you should be aware of your male getting stressed and potentially bloating. My breeder explained this to us since this was our first time going through the situation with our young male. The boys can go off their food and get stressed out themselves during those high estrus days when the bitch is really smelling "lovely" and worry themselves into bloating. So we were paying extra attention to him as far as when he was eating and playing, since he got off schedule and sometimes skipped a meal. Just something else to be aware of for those owners with hounds of both sexes. It was an added thing to bear in mind when we exercised them and then had meal times!
Patty Storkel The classic symptoms for Bloat are restlessness and unwilling to lie down, trying to retch, drooling, trying to nudge or bite at their sides, and as it progresses, a rounding out of the stomach- they look like they're going to birth a cow. You also get a tympanic rebound if you thump their side. Learn what your dogs' stomach feels like before eating- check right behind the last rib. Then check after a meal so you will know the difference. When the dog bloats, the tuck-up will disappear and you can feel a hard knot before the swelling advances. When Torsion occurs, they may try to vomit but will not be able to bring anything up. It's better, as others have said, to rush to the vet and have it be a bad case of gas, than to wait too long and have a fatality...
Becky Fleetwood-Demma Thank you Patty Storkel, great explanation.
Belle McCluskey Unfortunately Klondike only exhibited restlessness, none of the other signs.
Kathy Young Sampson was restless- was in the classic spinx position and was retching with nothing coming out. I didn't wait 10 minutes until he was at the ER. He was treated and was fine but he ate a LOT of gas x after that. I personally think his was stress related.
Kathy Young My standard poodle Napoleon would bloat- partially torse and flip back. His only symptom was he was very uncomfortable- restless, panting and could not lie down. We made quite a few ER visits that weekend before he had his surgery for lymphangtesia that Monday. I was lucky that I did not lose him
Marian Temple What is the youngest anyone has seen a hound bloat/ torsion?
Saskia Pauls Jamie was 5 months when he bloated. We could prevent torsion, fortunately. This is rare but they see it every now and then, the vets at the clinic said.
Donna Brown I heard of one case of a three month old puppy that bloated- many years ago.
·Marian Temple Old old timers use to tell us all a puppy would most likely not bloat or torsion...
Becky Fleetwood-Demma Even though I'm still a "rookie" with IWH's, the youngest I have heard of is 2. :(
Marian Temple Ive heard of a yearling..... sadly!
Kayla Sharp When I used to volunteer at a kennel bloat would happen to any breed that was playing hard shortly after a large meal. Our staff was trained to have them wait at least an hour before and after a meal before returning to 'play group' but sometimes accidents happened.
I have seen first hand a dog mow their bowl too quickly then run around their backyard (a friends house) and start to get bloat. If you know the signs you can usually stop it in time.
Signs of Bloat according to what I have seen personally:
-Gurgling, 'bloated in appearance belly'
-Sometimes burping
-Very round abdomen, almost hard to touch.
-Panting excessively.
I certainly hope that Brian's wolfie has had a safe recovery!
Crystal Haugen This is correct, and is more likely to happen with deep chested breeds
Char Morrow My boy is having loud gurgling sounds in his belly and loud burps over the last couple of days. Some SBD gas in the evening. He seems fine. Should I be concerned?
Kira Watson Pushard I feel like my boy especially is gurgly and burpy on a regular basis. I assumed it was normal for him.
Kathie McCarthy if you know how to coupage, that works wonders. ask your vet to show you how to properly coupage if you dont know how. two chewable cherry flavored gas-x too.
MJ Dewachter I always obey the rules: no wild games an hour before and after feeding, offering the food high enough, splitting it up in different meals rather than giving bigger and less meals, .. I experienced it three times and three times I luckily recognized it and rushed into hospital. Three times (with different dogs) it was gastric dilatation and no torsion yet and they survived. Twice the vet gave anesthetic and went with a tube into the stomach to suck the gasses out and pooh that stunk. We could once see .. the vet went with a camera up the stomach to see if any torsion had occurred cause he was doubting. The signals before were different. The 1st was refusing to lie down, panting, high heartbeat, wouldn't sit down neither, wouldn't move, was shaking on his legs and trying to vomit but nothing came out. It was of course the middle of the night, I woke up everyone and we carried him into the car and up to the clinic. The 2nd had been travelling in a car all night, stopping to eat and wee and driving again Home all went to bed, when we got up she was apathic, she wouldn't eat, drink, didn't react, was lying down. The 3rd had experienced a trauma that day. She'd been stuck in a grill in the street. After she started drinking lots and lots. Then the attempts for vomiting started with loud, very loud puking sounds, but nothing came out. My stomach started turning cause I knew and unfortunately I was right (they always take X-rays first) but fortunately I was early enough so no torsion yet.
Char Morrow Oh wow MJ. Thank you for your sharing your experiences. This is very helpful. I’m so glad you had successful outcomes.
MJ Dewachter Char it is very frightening. Last time I broke all rules and entered the forbidden zone and went into the operation room; because just before they'd come out to weigh her and my penny dropped they wanted to know that for the anesthetic, so I went to wa...Meer weergeven
John Turner Alfie, our 18 month old Deerhound bloated last week
Was in the vet at 4pm and on the table at 6.30pm
No torsion and stomach now stitched to abdominal wall
Prior signals were no drink, no eating and lethargic and swollen tummy
We knew the points to check as an angel from Deerhound UK group talked us through it
He was in overnight, collected next evening and is now doing well three days post op
We’ve always fed high although we have two terriers fed on the floor and a thieving Deerhound
We will watch that in future
MJ Dewachter John Turner thanks for sharing
Brendan Brannigan Many may recall when Fiona experienced bloat in July of 2014. We had been at the Medieval Faire where she spent the day being adulated as the Royal Hound of Avaloch. When we got back home she came in drank some water ate a little bit of food then went out and roamed around for a little bit and also chased one of the cats briefly. After she came in I went to the store with one of the people I live with to get supplies to restock their booth at the faire, we had been gone about 10-15 minutes when her husband called and said Fiona was not acting right and had vomited up some foam, bile and a little food. We immediately came back to the house and I found Fiona in distress, breathing rapidly but only short breaths. She seemed disoriented, lethargic, was retching with nothing but foam coming out, and I noticed her abdomen was distended and sounded like a watermelon when I tapped on it. Since I had just gone through a class on recognizing bloat at work when I was working at All About Dogs I immediately knew she had bloated. Since it was now 7pm on a Saturday I spoke to the vet office emergency number nurse who said I had two choices of emergency clinics to go to depending which would be closer. Fortunately Fiona was able to walk out and get into the car on her own and we rushed off to the closest emergency vet clinic while calling to let them know we were on our way. When we got there they took her in immediately and checked her out, and about 20 minutes later a nurse came out said she was going to be ok and it didn’t appear to be that bad, 10 minutes after that the vet came out and explained that she had torsed and required surgery as soon as possible. Fortunately the got her in within 90 minutes of her initial symptoms and saved her before any damage could be done to her stomach or intestines. She was tacked to prevent it from happening again and 4 years later she is as healthy as if it had never happened and today celebrates her 7th. birthday. That is Fiona’s tale of bloat.
Becky Fleetwood-Demma I remember all to well. Thank god she's celebrating her 7th birthday.
Marilyn Danko Thank all for sharing stories of bloat. I appreciate the information.
Sherry-David Turney ? We have our 5th IW and leave the food out. None of them have had any issues. Is this not a good thing to
KC Duncan I tend to agree with genetics and hereditary aspects. I have had several over the years and seems to be in families.
Nancie Bolger 34 yrs here never had any hounds with bloat. In my early years It was possible BC of the poor quality breeders but never ever. Education is best to know signs.
Jodie Jeweler I have written an article (vet checked) about bloat from a dog (specifically IW, but any dog) owner's standpoint... symptoms, what to do, expect, etc... I will share it with anyone... PM or email me Jodie@jewelerfamily.com. as long as my name stays on it & it isn't modified, you can share it with puppy owners, friends, clubs, vets, etc.
Jodie Jeweler Dylan didn't display enough of the symptoms for me- a newbie- to realize what exactly was going on- he overate (my fault) and had a tummy ache. He would lie quietly until he had to roll over, when he'd cry. No panting, no strange postures, no strange behaviors... I kept giving him tums & gas-x, and when my vet opened, rushed him in. X-rays showed only bloat, so they tried to tube him, but he promptly developed torsion & had surgery. He wouldn't eat, so it was a few days before he came home, but he made a complete & fast recovery.
Jodie Jeweler Limerick also had weird symptoms (he had "water bloat" where the stomach fills with water from over drinking, 3x in a year- I kept thinking it was my bad management, but probably a lifelong issue that led to gastric paresis)... he kept vomiting, randomly, for a week. vet couldn't find anything really wrong, so we gave him anti-nausea meds, and waited... sunday evening (of course), he began to vomit non stop, then developed the weird stance... run to the emergency vet... he kept burping in the vet's face, and puked in her shoes... turned out he had - apparently- vomited so hard he swung his stomach around like a pendulum & torsed... then bloated at the vets! he also had surgery & was home the next morning... recovered very fast, but developed (or maybe the vomiting was the 1st obvious symptom) gastric paresis soon after...
